A Patriot's Soliloquy
Hope, it's a fickle word... ambiguous yet said with passion and conviction. There is hope that India will rise to greatness, that india will one day become a developed nation with strong ideals and powerful cultures, there is hope. How much?
Is hope alone enough to sustain the Himalayan pride? It is enough to provide for an overpopulated country in an era of scarcity?
The indian people are patriotic... hypocrites in their loyalty to the nation. A cricket mach will ensure that every indian paint his face in shades of the scared saffron, white and green; but that same indian will still vote for the politician with the highest bribes. He will still abandon his country in search for the 'American Dream'.
Pollution, population, politics and poverty... this is the Indian Reality. We are an endangered species. The cultures that have flourished for thousands of years, a history of a hundred kings and sultans, and of arts beyond imagination, are endangered by our plight today. Like the white tiger, we walk on the edge of extinction.
India is unique; it will remain unique, whether it lives past the struggle or dies trying.

Ouch.
Yeah, I wonder (taking us back to the 'boring' topic of PeakOil) what will happen to everyone except eh excessively rich (The Brilas, Mallyas, etc.) and the excessively fit (???) in 30 years from now...
And, more importantly, where will WE be?? Is our generation any different from those before us, or are we just more empowered, and even more stupid in our own way that our forefathers...?
Well about PeakOil... I just feel like ur not givin us enough credit... We've survived this long... and there's always corn (ethanol), solar energy, wind, hydro, biomass... True these still are inefficient but if they've only just been discovered don't you think that in another ten years we'll be able to depend on them further? And don't you think that if we could become less dependent on oil, that we could increase the time it will take for oil resources to run out? Correct me if I'm wrong... just an ignorant person talking...
And about India in general... I'm not actually that pessimistic... It was an on-the-spot exercise and it had a lot to do with my mood... so for anyone patriotic and hope-bound, I meant no offence whatsoever!
Wow Ruz... I honestly salute you for starting this website! It may just be what we need to start the transition into a developed nation!
AS far as hypocrites go, I think we're not very far behind. Going to an International School puts huge pressure on one to conform. We like to follow the latest international trends and celebrity gossip, we like to know what the latest gadgets and must have accessories of the West are, and flaunt them if we have them. We feign conern for our people and culture every now and then, but rarely have any quality time to do much about it. All you have to do is listen to the conversation on our school bus, or look out the window when on Brigade Road, or observe the behaviour of people who shop at the Forum and you'll see what I mean. It doesn't have to be that way.
But where do you find the strenght to risk being different. How different are you willing to be?
Kudos Arvind!
